Mohammad and Ali Asghar, two of Velayati’s sons, are property developer tycoons and founders of Seif Bana Engineering Consultancy, a contractor company involved in the gas, oil, and petrochemical industry and property developments in Iran. These brothers have built over 1,600 units in Tehran, particularly in elite and upmarket areas such as Elahiyeh and an office complex in Turkmenistan.
Their appearance in Istanbul at a luxury conference, in December 2020, with Jordan Belfort, who is known as the “Wolf of Wall Street,” became controversial following public outcry about how his sons could afford to live such a luxurious lifestyle, when Velayati was simultaneously encouraging Iranians to learn from Houthi rebels, and instead of wearing lavish clothing, live simply and eat “dried bread.”
He also has a son-in-law, Mohammad Reza Jafar Aghari, who is tied to extensive corruption cases; while his two sons are closely linked to companies that have faced charges of embezzlement and corruption. However, all accusations of illicit behavior have remained immune from any inspection, questioning, or judicial follow-up due to Velayati’s influence in the political structure and his years of close relationship with Ali Khamenei. A clear picture of a kleptocracy.
